This past weekend, my partner and I went on a little getaway to the charming town of Almonte, Ontario. This was our first trip since the pandemic began, so we didn’t want to venture too far from Ottawa. Almonte has a very friendly, quaint small town feel. It is a historic mill town in Lanark County, and just a 45 minute drive from Ottawa. Almonte is the also the filming location for many Hallmark movies, and after seeing some photos, you’ll see why! We arrived Saturday afternoon, did a bit of exploring, and treated ourselves to a nice hotel stay in Kanata on Saturday night. On Sunday morning, we headed back to Almonte for a late breakfast and more exploring. We were blessed with incredible late summer weather. We couldn’t have asked for more!
Metcalfe Geoheritage Park
The Metcalfe Geoheritage Park is a nice spot for a picnic while enjoying the scenic view of the Mississippi River. We also noticed some people fishing when we stopped by. There is plenty of free parking available.
Brookstreet Hotel
We stayed at the Brookstreet Hotel in Kanata, which is about a 25 minute drive from Almonte. Almonte does offer accommodations, but I wanted to stay in a larger hotel. I like the luxury of larger hotels. We were lucky to get a room on the 17th floor with a stunning view! We had dinner at the Perspectives Restaurant in the hotel, and sat outside on the patio.
After dinner, we enjoyed some time at the hotel’s indoor pool. Due to the provincial health restrictions, we had to reserve a time slot to use the pool. We were the only people there for our 1 hour time slot. It was nice to have the entire pool and hot tub to ourselves, but it was also kind of… spooky!
Almonte Riverwalk
The Almonte Riverwalk is a lovely scenic walk along the Mississippi River, featuring neat wooden bridges and boardwalks. It is perfect for taking photos!
A Few Food Options
We had breakfast at the Superior Restaurant, in the heart of downtown. With it’s dusty pink walls and plum cushioned booths, the Superior Restaurant has a very comforting, old-school homey feel. The coffee and service were great!
Tea and Cake is, well exactly as the name says: a tea and cake shop. Right when I walked in, the first thing I noticed was the bright blue wall of pretty plates. They staff is very welcoming. Tea and Cake offers a nice selection of pastries, including some gluten free options.
Gemmill Park
The last place we explored in Almonte was Gemmill Park. This park offers 2 short trails in the woods with different levels of difficulty. We took the harder option, and part of our trek included hiking uphill. The leaves were just beginning to change for fall.
We both had a fantastic time in Almonte. If you like visiting small towns, Almonte is a must!
Looks so pretty π
