Cecelia Ahern is one of my favourite authors. This book was SO fun to read! The title sounds like a self-help book, and the chapters are all written self-help style: “How to Sincerely Apologise When You Realize You Have Hurt Someone”, “How to Have Your Cake and Eat It”, “How to Dig a Hole to the Other Side of the World”. However this is NOT a self-help book, it’s a really cute and romantic novel, with a very serious side to it.
Christine is the main character and the novel starts off with her going through an awful time. She recently made the difficult decision to leave her husband. Why? Did he cheat on her? Or was he abusive? No, but Christine wasn’t happy in her marriage and instead of accepting a lifetime of misery, she chose to leave him. Now she looks like the bad guy and is stuck living in an empty flat she can barely afford, while her ex husband is doing everything in his power to make her life harder.
One night while Christine is wandering about Dublin like she usually does during her bouts of insomnia, she meets Adam. However this is no ordinary meeting, as Adam is poised to jump from the Ha’Penny bridge! Christine is desperate to help and talks him into a deal. She’ll prove him his life is worth living in two weeks time, if he promises to stay alive until then. This task quickly proves to be easier said than done!
During the days that follow, Christine makes it her mission to “fix” Adam’s life: she will help him win back his girlfriend, get his job back and find a way out of his family business duties, all without letting Adam leave her sight. She tries to show him happiness through little things. As the days move forward, little by little, something completely unexpected starts to happen!
Thanks for reading! xo
